The start of the academic year at Aberystwyth University is a busy time. There is an increase in traffic heading to the small coastal town as thousands of new students arrive from across the UK and EU. It also coincides with the Student Union’s Freshers’ week which adds to the number of visitors.
The Special Constabulary has been involved in the policing of Freshers’ Week in Aberystwyth since 2011. Special Constables engage with students and visitors to provide any support or assistance they might need. They work closely with other volunteers, such as those from St John Cymru Wales to ensure that the week runs smoothly. The work of the Specials also allows response police officers to concentrate on the day-to-day policing of the town during this busy period.
