Their work helps the police progress investigations with people in custody more efficiently. This in turn helps reduce the amount of time a detainee may spend in custody, which is particularly important if they are vulnerable, and helps provide a better service for crime victims.
Currently, the Appropriate Adult Volunteers are dealing with around 100 cases each year. Volunteers show exceptional commitment – and in one case, a volunteer was able to help four detainees in one day. Importantly, volunteers offer detainees compassion and understanding and are often a vital bridge in communication between those in custody and the police.
