Appropriate Adult Volunteers – Staffordshire Police

Staffordshire’s Appropriate Adult Volunteers provide assistance to people in custody. They have a unique role in which they support detainees by making sure they understand what is happening and ensuring their rights are respected.

Their work helps the police progress investigations with people in custody more efficiently. This in turn helps reduce the amount of time a detainee may spend in custody, which is particularly important if they are vulnerable, and helps provide a better service for crime victims.

Currently, the Appropriate Adult Volunteers are dealing with around 100 cases each year. Volunteers show exceptional commitment – and in one case, a volunteer was able to help four detainees in one day. Importantly, volunteers offer detainees compassion and understanding and are often a vital bridge in communication between those in custody and the police.
