Cadets Help Vulnerable People – Derbyshire Police

Derbyshire Cadets Jodie Overbury and Daniel Cairns took on voluntary work experience with a Police Community Support Officer during July 2016.

In the High Peak area, there was an ongoing issue of elderly people being victimised. They are one of the most vulnerable groups in that community and their protection is a local priority. The residents of a local retirement home had been identified as being part of the group targeted by offenders.

Jodie and Daniel delivered a talk to the residents, which explained the best ways to ensure their home remained secure, as well as giving tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. They gave up time in the summer holidays to meet officials and arranged for representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society, Fire Service and local support networks to attend the home.

The local Safer Neighbourhood Team were so impressed with their work that they adopted the presentation and replicated the talk in other retirement homes for the rest of the year.

Jodie and Daniel’s message has now reached hundreds of vulnerable people and helped improve public safety.
