Consett SpeedWatch Team – Durham Constabulary

The issue of speeding vehicles in the Consett area was continually being highlighted whenever the police held meetings with local residents. There was a perception that the police were not taking sufficient action to tackle the matter.

The solution was SpeedWatch, an initiative which allows volunteers to use monitoring equipment to both collect data and deter motorists from breaking the speed limit in their community.

Residents from Consett volunteered to form a SpeedWatch team to address the issue of speeding drivers. The team has had a positive impact, not only deterring speeding motorists but also reducing demand on police officers in the local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

The success of the Consett volunteers has resulted in more SpeedWatch schemes being set up across the force.
