Special Constables often provide support and additional resource to the policing of local events to ensure that they run smoothly and so that members of the public can enjoy them safely.
One such example is local football matches. In October 2016, Special Constables from Redditch Police Station worked with the local Safer Neighbourhood Team, providing a dedicated unit ready to respond to any incidents and provide a high visibility presence at the football match between Redditch United FC and Leamington FC.
The duty for the Special Constables, including two Special Sergeants and the Redditch and Bromsgrove Special Inspector, began with an intelligence briefing alongside other officers.
For the evening, the officers were joined by one of West Mercia Police’s ‘football spotters’ – a dedicated police officer trained to provide support to other officers in identifying individuals of interest, and to act as a link between the police and both football clubs’ supporters.
The evening saw Special Constables pay attention to bars and pubs in the town centre, where staff and customers were pleased to see officers out conducting foot patrols.
For the officers the evening was a success as it passed without incident, both inside and outside of the ground.
